Harry Kane made history on Tuesday evening as the Bayern Munich forward scored four times in his side’s 9-2 thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb.

Kane’s four-goal haul saw him eclipse Wayne Rooney as the highest-scoring Englishman in Champions League history, while the 31-year-old also became the first English player to score four goals in a game in the competition.

“Whenever you’re in a conversation with Wayne Rooney, it means you’re doing something well,” Kane told Prime Video.

“He’s one of the greatest English players and one of the best players there was in the game. It’s a nice achievement.”

Kane’s return also saw him level Andy Cole and Michael Owen for Champions League hat-tricks by an Englishman (2), while he is the 19th player to score four goals in a Champions League game.

Of those, only two – Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski – have scored four goals in a game on more than one occasion, while three players, Messi, Luiz Adriano and Erling Haaland, have netted five times in a single Champions League fixture.
