The club is taking part in Freedom of Expression Week once again. Eintracht’s campaign is headed up by Makoto Hasebe, who follows in the footsteps of Timothy Chandler, Peter Fischer and Merle Frohms.

Friday 3 May marks World Press Freedom Day. This year will be the fourth time that the Freedom of Expression Week has been observed on this important date, and Eintracht Frankfurt are once again taking part.

Eintracht’s representative in this year’s campaign is Makoto Hasebe, who is following in the footsteps of Timothy Chandler, former president Peter Fischer and Frankfurt’s former goalkeeper Merle Frohms, who all supported this initiative in previous years. The highly symbolic Freedom of Expression Week runs until 10 May. That date marks the 91st anniversary of the book burning, which was when the National Socialist regime deliberately destroyed books and other writings.

“Unfortunately, freedom of expression is still not something that can be taken for granted all over the world,” said Hasebe. “It’s a hallmark of democracy, which we want to stand up for. This is an important reminder, especially shortly before the European elections. This campaign has already become a tradition at Eintracht Frankfurt and I’m happy to be a part of it.”

Democratic values are firmly established at Eintracht Frankfurt, and the club is fully committed to freedom of expression. A charter has been signed by CEO Axel Hellmann and numerous other members.

Extensive programme

An extensive programme throughout Germany – both online and elsewhere – will help bring the topic to the attention of all who are interested. Debates, discussions, presentations, performances and many other activities will help ensure that the importance of freedom of expression continues to be held in high regard and also become deeply ingrained in the minds of young people.
