Manchester United are reportedly stepping up their pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike.
United are in the market for a new striker after another difficult season for Rasmus Hojlund. Regularly scoring goals was a big problem for United in the 2024/25 campaign, which saw them finish a lowly 15th place and with a -10 goal difference.
Patience with Hojlund is wearing thin and there are suggestions that the Dane could be on his way out of Old Trafford, amidst interest in his services from Serie A.
Even if Hojlund remains at the club, his performances have raised legitimate concerns about his readiness to be United’s primary striker.
Heading into the summer transfer window, Liam Delap was United’s first-choice target. However, the England youth international snubbed the Red Devils in favour of a switch to Chelsea, who lured him to Stamford Bridge with Champions League football.
United continue to be linked to the likes of Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres, Jean-Phillippe Mateta, Benjamin Sesko and of course, Ekitike.
A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United had reached out to Frankfurt to register their interest in Ekitike and learn the conditions of getting a deal over the line.
Frankfurt are understood to want £85m to sanction Ekitike’s sale. Club CEO Markus Krosche confirmed as much in a transfer warning to Ekitike’s suitors, insisting that the player will not be allowed to leave for anything less than their valuation.
A self-confessed United fan, Ekitike enjoyed a superb season, plundering 22 goals and 12 assists across all competitions.
Now, Foot Mercato have given an update on the Frenchman’s situation.
According to the news outlet, “discussions are intensifying” between United and Ekitike’s camp over a potential switch to Old Trafford.
Foot Mercato state, “Discussions have accelerated over the past two days between Hugo Ekitike’s agent and Manchester United’s management. The English club has been closely monitoring the French striker since his debut at Reims, and now seems ready to go on the offensive.”
“Talks between Manchester United and the player’s entourage have progressed very well, demonstrating the Red Devils’ real interest. Both parties are optimistic after these positive approaches.”
United are aware of Frankfurt’s demands.
But Ruben Amorim’s side aren’t the only club eyeing Ekitike. He is also on the radar of Liverpool and Chelsea.
