Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has shared his thoughts on his newfound responsibilities at the club under Ruben Amorim.
United endured a tough 2024/25 season, finishing a lowly 15th place, having suffered 18 total top-flight defeats.
It was statistically the club’s worst campaign in over 50 years, and there was even more heartbreak in store at the end of it as they fell to a 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.
Determined to avoid a repeat of recent missteps, Amorim has focused on fostering a shift in mindset at United, believing it will ultimately raise performance levels.
He started by banishing a group of five players deemed surplus to requirements at United. Amorim also revealed that he had appointed a six-man leadership group to help ensure the team runs smoothly and efficiently.
The Portuguese coach named Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Tom Heaton, Noussair Mazraoui and Dalot as the members of the leadership group.
Dalot has now opened up about the trust Amorim has placed in him and how he is enjoying it.
The 26-year-old said [as quoted by Daily Mail], “It obviously brings you even more responsibility. I think one of the reasons why that happened is because of the way I am.”
“So I try to be the same person, but obviously it brings you even more responsibility because we’re talking about a very good group of players with different personalities that I think we can try to create a culture where we demand the maximum from our teammates, from ourselves as well.”
Dalot added, “But we have to be the first ones to give the example.”
“I think that’s the best way that I like to lead also.”
“We have to be the first ones to show to everyone where we want to put the club back on top and then try to put everyone in the same. Like we say in Portugal, everyone is in the same boat.”
United are back in action on Sunday when they kickstart their 2025/26 Premier League season with a home match against Arsenal.
