Derby County supporters will be counting down the days until the Championship campaign gets underway after securing promotion back to the league.

The Rams had been stuck in League One for two seasons but ended their time in the division after securing automatic promotion to the second tier.

Paul Warne came under significant pressure at times, but the club remained patient, and that paid off as Derby sealed a second-place finish ahead of the likes of Bolton Wanderers and Peterborough United.

It is now Warne’s task to put together a squad that is capable of competing in the Championship, and with the Rams already deciding to let several players leave following the end of their contracts, it may be expected that Derby will be busy this summer.

One area of the team that is weak is the midfield, and a player that should become a priority for the club is Ebou Adams.

The 28-year-old spent the final six months of the season on loan at the club from Cardiff City, during which time he was an important figure in the team, as he started all 17 league games he was available for, during which he scored one goal and chipped in with an assist.

It has been reported that Derby are interested in re-signing the player this summer, and that should be a signing they make, as he fitted into Paul Warne’s team and would help them strengthen their midfield for what is likely going to be a tough season.

But as well as signing Adams, Derby should follow up on his addition by adding Bobby Clark and Devante Cole to their ranks. Here is why…

Bobby Clark

Liverpool’s Bobby Clark is someone who could potentially be a loan target for several Championship clubs this summer.

The 19-year-old has been impressing in Liverpool’s under-21 team and has also been catching the eye in the small games he has had with the first team.

The midfielder has yet to have a loan spell away from Anfield, and the club may consider this to be the next part of his development, especially if the club brings in some new players during the next couple of months.

According to Derbyshire Live, midfield is a key area to address for Derby this summer, as Paul Warne looks to build a midfield from scratch in his image.

The report goes on to state that Derby are long-term admirers of Liverpool’s Bobby Clark.

It states that the Premier League loan market is an option for the club this summer, and Derby have been interested in Clark for some time.

It seems that midfield strengthening is high on the list of priorities for the club this summer, and adding someone like Clark would definitely do that.

The Liverpool man would bring energy, enthusiasm, and a threat in front of goal that they may have been lacking. It would be a good move for both the player and the Rams, as Clark joins a team where he will play week in and week out, which will aid his development and let him return to his parent club better for the experience.

While for Derby, they add a player who has an exciting future ahead of him and could be a real difference-maker in their midfield, plus it would be a loan deal, so it is saving the Championship side money.

Devante Cole

The other player that Derby should look to sign this summer is striker Devante Cole.

The 29-year-old is leaving Barnsley at the end of the month, meaning he will become a free agent, and the Rams should be interested in a deal.

Cole’s time with the Tykes has been rather successful, as the last two league seasons have seen him score 33 goals in 91 games.

The forward has been sensational in League One, becoming one of the top performing strikers in the league, and him now becoming a free agent is likely going to see a lot of teams circle with interest.

The one concern regarding the player would be that he hasn’t played much in the second tier before, and his scoring record isn’t great.

But given how well he has done in recent seasons, the Championship is likely going to be the next destination for the player; therefore, Derby should be looking to get ahead of the other teams.

The forward line will be another area that needs addressing this summer, as the Rams have decided to let Dwight Gayle and Martyn Waghorn leave following the end of their contracts.

Thus, if Derby added someone like Cole to their ranks, they would be improving their options for the season ahead, and again, it would be a deal that saves money while strengthening their team.
