Manchester United have reached a full agreement with Brentford to sign Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo, in a deal that could rise to £71million. As first reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic, United will pay an initial £65m across four instalments, with a further £6m in performance-related bonuses.

After weeks of prolonged negotiations, United’s persistence has paid off. Mbeumo, 25, made it clear from the start he preferred a move to Old Trafford over any other potential suitor — despite reported interest from Arsenal, Newcastle, and Tottenham. Ornstein confirmed that “Mbeumo had informed Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur… of his decision to sign for United if he makes a transfer this summer.”

With 20 goals and 8 assists across all 38 Premier League appearances last season, Mbeumo was Brentford’s standout player and one of the most consistent attacking threats in the league. His versatility, goal output, and work rate made him a prized asset — and Brentford held firm throughout the negotiations.

Originally a product of French side Troyes’ academy, Mbeumo joined Brentford in 2019 and quickly became integral to the club’s rise to Premier League stability. His numbers across six seasons — 242 appearances, 70 goals, and 51 assists — underline a player who consistently delivers.

From a Manchester United supporter’s point of view, this feels like a progressive, intelligent signing — albeit at a steep price. Bryan Mbeumo may not be a superstar name, but his output speaks volumes: 20 goals from the wing in a mid-table side is no small feat.

There’s a clear shift here from marquee signings based on reputation to players bought for functionality and fit. Mbeumo’s pressing, speed in transition, and ability to find the net add exactly the kind of end product United have lacked from wide positions in recent seasons. His availability record is also excellent — playing every single league game last season is a testament to his durability.

Of course, fans will debate whether £71m could’ve been better spent on more proven European names. But this is a player entering his prime, with Premier League experience and a ceiling still to hit.
