Cyriel Dessers soars as Rangers striker hits 10

It is safe to say Cyriel Dessers is among the most in-form players in Scotland.

10 goals and assists in 9 appearances is ‘on-fire’ form and the lad is replicating the levels shown by ex-Rangers striker Antonio Colak when he too hit electric numbers at the start of 22/23.

Indeed, we can rarely remember a Rangers striker to be hitting these numbers at this level aside the now-Spezia front man, and it’s safe to say Dessers is getting a lot more love from Ibrox fans, even if many still whine at him for taking one touch too many or missing big chances.

And he does miss some big chances – but it’s Kyogo who has actually missed almost double what Dessers has, so he’s not a profligate as some might suggest.

In terms of Dessers’ numbers, they’re good, really good. 7 goals, 3 assists in 9 appearances, including a Champions League goal and 3 in 5 in the SPL.

Dessers is most definitely in some of his best career form right now, and he’s not being as pillared as he used to be by Rangers’ cynical fans, even if there is still cynicism about him.

It’s true that Dessers lacks presence up front, he’s not strong despite being a pretty tall guy, and he’s not really one to pick out as an aerial target. He’s not a typical centre-forward anyway.

But he does make a nuisance of himself, and he plays what we’d call ‘grimy’ football – not pretty on the eye, not polished, and even a bit scrappy, borderline ugly – but 10 in 9 says it’s working, and it’s hard to be critical of a striker with those numbers.

We think the addition of Morocco’s Hamza Igamane is getting even more out of Dessers – the youngster looked very promising in his cameos and if developed right could end up a valuable asset. Dessers is definitely looking over his shoulder.

That kind of healthy competition is essential at a club like Rangers and we have lacked opposition up front and choices for a long time. We now have Dessers and Igamane, and hopefully we’ll have Danilo before too long.

Dessers can just keep on doing his thing for now.
