Ralf Rangnick would have been given a lot of freedom of choice if he had been at FC Bayern. Despite this, he has committed himself to his job as Austria’s national team coach. The reasons for this are complex.

After Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick was the third big name to turn down the coaching job at FC Bayern. This is despite the fact that the 65-year-old would have been entrusted with the responsibility of helping to shape the long-term reorganisation at Säbener Straße. Rangnick would have met three Bayern bosses with a past at RB in the form of head of youth development Jochen Sauer, sporting director Christoph Freund and sporting director Max Eberl.

According to The Athletic, one of the main reasons for Rangnick’s cancellation – which he himself does not see as such, as he recently announced – is his work schedule as national team coach. At the age of 65, he no longer wants to be on the training pitch every day. Furthermore, he is held in the highest esteem by the Austrian fans and the national team players. Something that did not seem to be one hundred per cent certain for him in Munich.

Rangnick was certainly trusted with the mission of driving forward the upheaval at the German record champions, as he has a lot of experience in developing young players. In the future, FC Bayern wants to focus more on home-grown talent instead of just signing fully trained top stars.

The aim is to save money but still maintain the sporting level at the top European level. In addition, Rangnick is believed to be the first coach after Hansi Flick to be able to bring the dressing room together and create harmony within the team.
