Plucked out of the Championship, Wharton has adapted quickly to Premier League football and is already considered among the brightest young talents in the league.

Under new manager Oliver Glasner, Wharton has become a vital part of Palace's recent resurgence, winning three of their last four games.

The midfielder had displayed experience beyond his years in the topflight, a by-product of the trust shown in him from an early age at his hometown club, Blackburn.

Wharton had been on the radar of Premier League clubs for some time. But Palace's track record of nurturing young talent from the Championship saw Wharton arrive at Palace ahead of the likes of Chelsea,Tottenham and Everton.

Wharton joins Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze in making up a young core of former EFL players at Palace, and under Glasner, the future looks bright for the Eagles.

With Wharton now routinely dominating Premier League matches, his market value has skyrocketed, and Palace are set to make a huge return on their £22m investment should they decide to sell.

Wharton has replaced the impact of Cheick Doucoure

Cheick Doucoure was a revelation for Palace last season.

A combative all-action midfielder, he helped Palace play through the transition, providing support for Eze and Olise.

He was voted the club's Player of the Year, attracting interest from Liverpool as they looked to overhaul their midfield last summer, and he was widely considered one of the signings of the season.

This season, however, Doucoure has struggled with an achilles injury, which has seen him sidelined since November.

Palace's form dropped dramatically following Doucoure's injury, leading to the departure of Roy Hodgson.

One of Hodgson's last acts, though, was to bring in Wharton to add some calm and composure to Palace's midfield.

The youngster endured a chastening start to life in the Premier League with a heavy defeat on debut to rivals Brighton before a late collapse at home to Chelsea.

Wharton eventually got his first win against Burnley. But it was away to Liverpool where he'd truly announce himself.

Palace were resolute out of possession and incisive with the ball, setting up to frustrate Liverpool before pouncing on the break and scoring the only goal of the game through Eze.

Wharton was at the centre of everything good that day, winning back possession and quickly moving the ball into space as the Eagles all but ended Liverpool's title aspirations with a clinical performance.

Chelsea, Tottenham and Everton will regret not acting quicker

Wharton was a coveted asset before he arrived at Palace and had been on the radar of several Premier League clubs.

That the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and Everton didn't move quickly to sign the young midfielder will be a source of endless frustration for those clubs, with Wharton's value having increased tenfold since he moved to Palace.

Palace look like a team heading in the right direction under Glasner, and it will be fascinating to see how Wharton develops over the coming seasons.

It will be no surprise to see interest in Wharton intensify if he keeps up this form and a maiden England call-up can't be far away, especially given England's issues in the centre of the park.
