However, the deal with Dubai-based luxury real estate developer DAMAC Properties is less about football and more about global branding.

Chelsea spent most of the 2024/25 season sponsorless, a commercial embarrassment for a club of this stature, but the Blues have struck a short-term agreement with DAMAC.

The deal covers four remaining Premier League matches and the business end of the Europa Conference League run. It also includes the women’s team.

But why has it taken Chelsea this long? The failure to land a permanent, big-name front-of-shirt sponsor since the collapse of their deal with telecoms firm Three is telling.

That relationship soured after Three tried to distance themselves during the Roman Abramovich sanctions. Fans haven’t forgotten.

The reputational hit Chelsea took during that turmoil, combined with underperformance on the pitch and uncertainty over brand stability, made corporations cautious.

Potential collaborations with the Jordan Brand and Oman Air collapsed unceremoniously.

And so, the club pivoted. DAMAC isn’t a household name in football. However, they are investing in a Chelsea-branded luxury residential development in Dubai.

The £1 billion project is styled after the Chelsea ethos. This deal looks like a commercial marriage of convenience.

Chelsea get a short-term sponsor to stop the rot, and DAMAC gets brand exposure for their development in one of the most expensive marketing spaces in sport.

The deal is considered healthy by the club hierarchy. Even though financials remain under wraps, it should add a decent sum to the Chelsea coffers.

The move is brilliant. With Chelsea featuring in the Club World Cup in the United States this summer, visibility will surge.

DAMAC’s name could be on the shirt during that tournament, giving them a global stage to launch their project. Could is the operative word here, as it is not set in stone.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea could rotate through three sponsors within four months.

DAMAC now, another for the Club World Cup, and potentially a separate deal for next season.

These changes sound chaotic, but they show the club is trying to leverage short-term commercial flexibility in a competitive space.

Premier League rules allow only one shirt sponsor per season, which has always been a limiting rule.

Chelsea will reportedly consider exceptions and creative structuring (like different sponsors for men’s, women’s, and international tournaments).

For now, DAMAC is a patch, albeit a luxury one. They are not a long-term fix. Chelsea’s value to potential sponsors is still somewhat diluted by instability on and off the pitch.

However, with projects like Chelsea Residences and the potential of American exposure through the Club World Cup, the club is betting on brand appeal.

It is a gamble, but for a club seeking revenue and relevance, it’s a play they had no choice but to make.
