Chelsea confirm defender Colwill is set for long spell out | OneFootball

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is set for a long spell on the sidelines after suffering an ACL injury in training.

The 22-year-old has undergone surgery and will likely miss the majority of the upcoming season, Chelsea have confirmed.

Blues boss Enzo Maresca revealed ahead of the friendly against Bayer Leverkusen on Friday that Colwill had suffered an injury, saying: “We know how important Levi has been.

“I spoke with him yesterday and I told him if we achieve what we achieved last year, it’s also because of him.

“He was a main player for us.”

He also did not rule out dipping into the transfer market for defensive reinforcements should Colwill be out for a while.

Fellow central defender Wesley Fofana is closing in on a return to action, however.

The Frenchman missed most of last season with a hamstring problem but could be fit for the first game of the Premier League season.

Chelsea have also signed Jorrel Hato from Ajax, who could replace Colwill in the centre of defence.
