Atalanta fought back twice for a creditable 2-2 draw away to Barcelona, but finish just outside the top eight and lose Giorgio Scalvini to a serious injury.
La Dea were sure of a play-off spot, but wanted to join the Blaugrana in the Round of 16. Ademola Lookman joined Odilon Kossounou and Gianluca Scamacca on the treatment table, while the hosts missed Dani Olmo, Inigo Martinez, Andreas Christensen, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Marc Bernal, but started ex-Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.
As expected, it was a wide open and entertaining match with end to end attacks. Davide Zappacosta rolled across for the Charles De Ketelaere tap-in, blocked off by a desperate Balde interception that almost created an own goal past Szczesny, then Lamine Yamal curled off target after a solo run.
Atalanta had the ball in the net when Ederson threaded through for De Ketelaere, blocked off by Eric Garcia, but the ricochet fell into the path of Zappacosta to sweep in from 10 yards. However, it was ruled offside by VAR, as the final touch was off the Belgian.
Instead, Barcelona took the lead within 60 seconds of the restart, as Raphina gathered just after the centre-circle down the left and rolled it across, where Lamine Yamal anticipated both Marco Carnesecchi and Sead Kolasinac to dribble into the empty net.
Carnesecchi made a fantastic one-handed save on the Lamine Yamal angled drive and Atalanta got back on level terms when Ederson gathered just outside the area, dribbled past one tackle and drilled low into the near bottom corner.
Barcelona got back in front when Ronald Araujo was left totally unmarked at the back post to nod in the Raphinha corner.

It remained hugely entertaining, as Marten de Roon crossed from the right for Pasalic to control between two defenders and prod it past the on-rushing Szczesny from eight yards.
Nicolò Zaniolo failed to steer a Juan Cuadrado low cross on target at the near post, but Giorgio Scalvini fell awkwardly on a corner and had to be stretchered off with a dislocated shoulder.
