Callum Wilson has confirmed his decision to leave Newcastle United after his contract at the club expired.

Wilson’s deal expired on July 1st but discussions had been ongoing over a potential extension. Newcastle had offered the 33-year-old new terms, but had proposed an incentivised-based extension given Wilson’s injury issues in recent campaigns.

Wilson started just 11 league games over the last two seasons, with injuries and the form of Alexander Isak restricting his contribution. He has now decided to depart St James’ Park and leaves the Magpies having scored 49 goals in 130 games for the club.

In a statement on the club’s official website, Wilson said it was ‘time to say goodbye’ and thanked the fans for their support since his £20m move from Bournemouth in 2020.

“It’s time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years in the Toon,” Wilson said in a statement.

“Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.

“I am so proud to have worn the iconic number 9 shirt and to have added a little more history to it. Scoring at the Gallowgate End really is as special as they say.

“All good things come to an end but there’s no doubt Newcastle United will always have a place in mine and my families hearts.

“Thank you for the memories.”

Wilson is expected to receive considerable interest. Leeds United have been linked with adding the forward to their newly-promoted squad, while Everton have also been credited as admirers. The Toffees recently lost Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a free agent.
