The full-back has missed almost 16 months of action due to a severe hamstring injury
Aaron Hickey is set to return to full training early next month in a huge boost to Brentford manager Thomas Frank.
The versatile full-back has been doing running work at the club’s training ground for several weeks and is now close to participating in full training sessions with the rest of the team.
Hickey has been sidelined for almost 16 months with a severe hamstring injury sustained in October 2023. He first underwent surgery shortly after but suffered a setback in August 2024 and again went under the knife.
It was originally feared that he would miss the entirety of the current season when a second surgery to produce a new tendon repair did not entirely cure the pain, but the Scot is now close to returning.
Discussing his time out of action earlier this month, he admitted: “It has been difficult for me. It’s been disappointing, more than anything.”
The 22-year-old, who this month signed a new contract running until 2028, can play at right-back and left-back.
Brentford have been left short in both positions this season, partly owing to injury. Last week, they signed Michael Kayode from Fiorentina on loan until the summer, with the option to buy him for around £14million in the summer.
Mads Roerslev, who had been the first-choice right-back for much of the season, was allowed to leave, joining Wolfsburg on loan until July. The German side have an option to buy Roerslev once the loan ends.
