Bayern Munich's bid to recapture the Champions League trophy is hanging by a thread after they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Inter on home soil in Tuesday's quarter-final first leg.

Vincent Kompany's side enjoyed close to 60% possession but found themselves trailing to Lautaro Martinez's glorious opener, and they would not convert one of their 20 shots until Thomas Muller arrived off the bench with five minutes to go to set up a nervy finale.

It looked like Bayern could go on to find a winner, but Davide Frattesi punished the hosts on the break to pick up a huge victory for Inter.

How the game unfolded

Both sides made bright starts and the first chance of the game fell to Michael Olise six minutes in. The Frenchman's low drive was deflected agonisingly wide and Joshua Kimmich's ensuing corner landed on top of Yann Sommer's net.

Olise's cross then found Harry Kane in the six-yard box but the Englishman was always stretching to reach a header which he could only direct tamely into the hands of Sommer, who was undoubtedly the busier of the two goalkeepers in the opening exchanges.

Bayern should have had the lead 26 minutes in as their two creative forces combined. After a defensive mix-up gifted the Bundesliga side the ball, Olise danced around a handful of defenders and laid off to Kane, who could not comprehend how he only managed to find the outside of the post from close range.

Clear-cut chances were at a premium for Inter but Carlos Augusto nearly snatched an opener on the half-hour mark when he went racing in down the left wing, but he sent his effort fizzing into the side netting when he perhaps should have done better.

Fortunately for the Serie A side, they did not have to wait much longer to break the deadlock. An excellent team move culminated in a cross in to Marcus Thuram, whose delightful tee-up was gleefully met by the outside of Lautaro's boot to send Inter into the break ahead.

Bayern threw everything forward in search of an equaliser and had Inter penned back for the majority of the second half, but Simone Inzaghi's side are not afraid of digging deep defensively and made Bayern work incredibly hard for every inch of space.

Kane sliced a difficult volley wide from the edge of the penalty area and substitute Muller saw a great chance blocked with ten minutes to go, but there would be no denying the German five minutes later as he tapped home at the back post.

It looked like the two sides were destined to draw but, just three minutes later, Inter snatched themselves the unlikeliest of winners as Frattesi bundled home an electric counter to give the Serie A giants a lead to defend in next week's return leg.

Muller snubbed on start of farewell tour

When Jamal Musiala has been injured this season, it's been Thomas Muller who has come into the side to replace him. It seemed certain that the 35-year-old would get the nod here just three days after his imminent departure was confirmed, but that was not the case.

Instead of turning to Muller, Vincent Kompany deployed left-back Raphael Guerreiro as his attacking midfielder, clearly looking for more energy than the ageing raumdeuter can provide at his advanced age. The mobility was there, but Guerreiro failed to provide anything like the sort of spark Muller is capable of.

Fans were audibly excited as Muller entered the fray for the final 20 minutes, and it wasn't too long before he made his presence known by scoring his side's only goal. Ultimately, it mattered little, but one can't help but wonder whether he would have made more of an impact had he not been snubbed for a start here.

Inter's defence is not to be messed with

Heading into this game, Inter had conceded just twice in the Champions League this season, neither of which came in league phase meetings with Arsenal and Manchester City. The Serie A giants do not mess about at the back.

Alessandro Bastoni's ability to shake off a knee injury undoubtedly came as a huge boost to Inter who, while not always perfect here, largely held firm and repelled the vast majority of Bayern's threat until the final five minutes.

Inter are happy to sit deep and defend, mastering the art of parking the bus in an attacking style. Plenty of sides have been fallen foul to this tactic and, if Inter can advance to the next round, they will fancy their chances of causing problems for any other side in the competition.

An off night for Kane

By the time Inter opened the scoring here, Harry Kane could have already had at least one goal.

An early header for Bayern's top scorer was undeniably a difficult chance, but his miss midway through the half was an enormous surprise. With the goal gaping, Kane beat Sommer as he opened up his body and curled away from the Inter stopper, but there was audible surprise as his effort pinged away off the post.

Chances were few and far between for Kane but he has built a reputation on being able to score from the unlikeliest of opportunities. Unfortunately for Bayern, his sights were off here.
