Baroni: ‘Lazio deserved victory, as Roma did not create very much’

Marco Baroni feels Lazio ‘tried everything’ to win the Derby della Capitale, but were lacking a bit of good fortune to defeat Roma. ‘They didn’t create very much really.’

The Aquile had all the early scoring opportunities and took the lead when two lifelong Biancocelesti supporters combined, Luca Pellegrini whipping in the free kick for an Alessio Romagnoli header.

However, Matias Soulé pulled a moment of magic out of nowhere to draw Roma level, his left-foot first-time curler bouncing off the underside of the bar, confirmed by goal-line technology.

“Roma put some pressure on, but didn’t create very much really,” Baroni told DAZN.

“It’s a pity, my team gave its all and created many scoring opportunities, but perhaps we lacked a little bit of luck to get the victory we deserved. We will take the point anyway, knowing the team tried everything. It’s a pity.”

Inevitably, the fact that Lazio are still in the Europa League saw fatigue set in, as they were in Norway under snow playing the 2-0 quarter-final defeat to Bodo/Glimt on Thursday. Could the coach have made the changes earlier?

“I think we were doing well, we just had to keep the ball a bit longer, but we had balance throughout. Our fans are marvellous, I told the lads we need to believe on Thursday and soak up the energy from the crowd too, so the help the supporters can give us will be very important,” added Baroni.

“I don’t like to look like we’re seeking alibis, but it was played on an artificial pitch, Bodo/Glimt played with incredible intensity and physicality in those conditions. We know it will be a completely different match at the Stadio Olimpico.

“I believe, we all believe in our chances of going through, because we’ve got what it takes to turn that around.”

There seems to be an issue at the Stadio Olimpico, winning just one of their last nine games here, which is particularly concerning ahead of the second leg against Bodo/Glimt next Thursday evening.

“This is a young squad, it is growing, we want to be protagonists all the way this season and earn that with the way we play good football. I am sure we’ll get there,” concluded Baroni.
