According to Sport, Frenkie de Jong will miss Barcelona’s clash with Real Madrid this Saturday as he is still recovering from an ankle injury. The Dutch midfielder hasn’t featured in a match since last month’s game against Celta Vigo, when he was substituted after 35 minutes having picked up an injury.

The initial expectation was that De Jong would be back in time for El Clásico, but now the 26-year-old midfielder may have to wait until after the November international break to reappear. This also means bad news for national team head coach Ronald Koeman, who may have to make do without De Jong for next month’s matches against Ireland and Gibraltar. The Netherlands need three points from their Euro Qualifiers in order to secure a place in Euro 2024.

Frenkie de Jong has been a crucial player for Barcelona ever since he joined from Ajax in the summer of 2019. In total, he’s featured 190 times for Barca, helping the Spanish giants to a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup. For now, Barcelona supporters will have to wait even longer to see their midfielder back in action.
