Transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Real Madrid’s midfield target, Martin Zubimendi, has chosen to join Arsenal.
The reporter mentions that the Gunners have agreed to a €60 million deal with Real Sociedad for the Spanish midfielder, with Zubimendi having verbally agreed to a long-term contract.
The move is expected to be completed soon, marking a significant loss for Real Madrid, who had long been tracking the player.
Zubimendi had long been on Real Madrid’s radar, with many within the club appreciating his skills and seeing him as a potential fit for the team. However, the €60 million release clause proved a sticking point for Los Blancos, who were hesitant to meet the valuation.
This delay ultimately allowed Arsenal to swoop in and secure the midfielder’s signature. The decision to pass on Zubimendi comes as a significant blow to Real Madrid’s midfield reinforcement plans.

Compounding the frustration for the Madrid side is the decision of another key target, Florian Wirtz. The German midfielder, who had also been on Real Madrid’s shortlist, has opted to sign with Bayern Munich.
Despite interest from top clubs, including Real Madrid and Manchester City, Wirtz has chosen to remain loyal to Bayern, where he aims to continue his career.
These developments complicate Real Madrid’s midfield options as the club now faces the challenge of identifying and securing new talent in the coming transfer windows.
With Luka Modric also expected to leave after the Club World Cup, Real Madrid’s need for a new midfield signing becomes even more pressing.
As a result, Real Madrid will be forced to continue their search for a capable and promising midfielder to strengthen the squad, ensuring they remain competitive in the coming seasons.
