Ruben Amorim believes it is possible that Manchester United are dragged into a relegation battle this season.
Manchester United’s torrid campaign continued with a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Monday night. Goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton earned Newcastle the points and condemned Amorim’s side to a fourth straight loss. The defeat was also the club’s sixth in all competitions in December, their most in a single month since 1930.
Their 18 goals conceded in December is the club’s highest in a month in 64 years. Amorim’s arrival as manager has failed to shift the momentum, after the former Sporting Lisbon boss replaced Erik ten Hag in November.
United are 14th in the Premier League table, just seven points above the drop zone after Ipswich Town’s win over Chelsea on Monday. In Premier League history, four teams who were 14th at the turn of a year have gone on to be relegated (Newcastle in 2008-09, Burnley in 2009-10, Norwich in 2013-14 and Leeds in 2022-23).
It’s been 50 years since the club’s last relegation but Amorim believes his side could be dragged into a dogfight if results do not immediately improve.
“I think that it is a possibility. We have to be clear with our fans,” Amorim told BBC Sport.
“It is also my fault,” he continued when asked if it was embarrassing to be discussing Manchester United as relegation candidates.
“The team is not improving. It is a little bit lost in this moment and it is a bit embarrassing to be Manchester United coach and lose a lot of games.
“I think people are tired of excuses at this club. This club needs a shock.”
