Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 23 games | OneFootball

The Baggies started life without Carlos Corberán with defeat at Derby County, their first back-to-back away defeats of the campaign. It leaves them in eighth place, two points off the play-off places and one point off where they were at the same stage last season.

It was the Baggies’ ninth defeat in fifteen away games on Boxing Day, which doesn’t include the 1-0 defeat at Derby three years ago as that was on the 27th. If you include games on 27th December, it is eleven defeats in eighteen post-Christmas fixtures away from the Hawthorns.

It is Albion’s second lowest points total at this stage in a second tier season in the 21st century, with only the 29 points gained two seasons ago being lower in that period. As an aside, more than half of those points (15) had been secured in the seven games since Corberán had taken over.

In each of the last two seasons, the Baggies have secured more points in the second half of the season than in the first with Corberán’s team gaining 39 points in the final 23 matches of the last campaign. The most points achieved by an Albion side in the second half of one of our comparison seasons is 48 in Gary Megson’s first promotion season of 2001/02.

Despite the post on X from BetFred suggesting that Corberán had the best win percentage of any Albion manager to have managed 60 or more games, he’s actually second on that list to Roberto di Matteo. Carlos won 47 of his 107 games in all competitions (43.93%) and 45 of his 98 league games (45.92%) which compares with equivalent statistics of 48.19% and 46.48% for the Italian. Having said that, Di Matteo probably had the strongest squad in the Championship in 2009/10 although he did manage 25 games in the Premier League.

For those interested, Fred Everiss is third on the list in all competitions with 43.13% (656 of 1521 games!) ahead of Vick Buckingham with 42.86% (129 of 301). While he may not top the list, Carlos Corberán is certainly in some exulted company and achieved his results under very difficult circumstances.
