Ajax have withdrawn from the race for Edson Álvarez, according to ESPN NL. Sources close to the outlet suggest that the 27-year-old West Ham United midfielder is close to an agreement with Fenerbahçe.
Álvarez was considered manager John Heitinga’s dream target for the number six position, but it has proven financially unfeasible for Ajax. Even a one-year loan with an annual salary of around six million euros proves too steep for the Amsterdam club’s wallet. Ajax will therefore have to consider other options for the vacant midfield position.
Ajax entered the market for the right-footed midfield man, who previously played for the club between 2019 and 2023. Initially, a deal was deemed “difficult, but not impossible”, but now the financial permutations seem a little too steep.
Now it looks as though Fenerbahçe will loan Álvarez for a season. They have also negotiated a purchase option, though it remains to be seen whether Fenerbahçe will be able to afford the fee next season. Negotiations are nearing completion, and the Mexican is expected to be presented in Istanbul soon.
