The report from the Telegraph last week that Saudi side Al Nassr are lining up a big for Moises Caicedo was not taken seriously by most people.
This new edition of Chelsea are always looking to make money, but given we paid more than £100m for Caicedo, it’s hard to see how Al Nassr could possibly make it worth our while. And that’s to ignore the footballing side where, price tag aside, Caicedo has been one of the few success stories from the £1.5bn rebuild of this side.
He will be a worthy player of the year winner, and selling him would be one of the few ways that these sporting directors could make themselves less popular.
But we shouldn’t get complacent – anything is possible in football, especially when the unimaginable wealth of Saudi Arabia is at the table. They could offer Caicedo so much that we can’t compete.

One person who thinks a move is very possible is former Man U scout Mick Brown. In an exclusive with Football Insider he claimed that Chelsea “are not ruling out” a move for the Ecuador star.
He said that we would “entertain offers North of £100m.” That seems reasonable – but they’d have to be a long way North.
“I don’t think Caicedo will be at the top of their list of players to sell, but I also don’t think they’re going to rule out his exit,” Brown wrote.
“If they receive an offer from Saudi Arabia which is around the price they paid for him, so probably about £100million, it’s something they’ll take very seriously. That money would then be invested elsewhere in the squad because they still need improvements.”
Would you accept £130m for Caicedo if it was offered now? It would be tempting – he’s a really good player, but one can’t help but feel you could find one just as good for £60m and still have £70m left over to spend on a striker or a goalkeeper.
