We’ve heard some things in our time, but this story from Italy might just top the lot.

Ignazio Barbagallo, a 55-year-old amateur footballer, well-known in Sicily for his practical jokes was playing his last ever game for Viagrande at the weekend and decided to go out with a bang.

At home against Nebrodi, Barbagello came on and was then ‘abducted’ by supposed gangsters who landed a helicopter on to the pitch.

The only problem though, was that it was a complete sham, with Barbagello himself behind the whole thing.

Viagrande have been banned from playing home matches for the next month and fined €200.
