Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has issued an update on the fitness of several players, confirming a duo will play no further part.

That pair in question are midfielders Joe Willock and Lewis Miley, with the club preferring to stay cautious with their injuries.

“With Joe we don’t think so [play again this season]. A period of rest and strengthening his Achilles would be of more benefit,” Howe told reporters.

“A specialist told us we had a few options. He could have played on but we want to take a longer-term view but he doesn’t need an operation. That wouldn’t be a benefit.

“The same decision was made with Lewis for his long-term future. We won’t see him again this season. With the back problem he has, rest is the way to go.”

However, there is better news when it comes to striker Callum Wilson.

“He has trained very well this week and it is good to have him back,” added Howe. “He’s looking really good and we anticipate he’ll hit the ground running and make a difference for us.”

Kieran Trippier, Joelinton, Miguel Almirón and Nick Pope have not yet returned to training although the man in charge insisted there is still ‘hope’ that he will play a part this season.
