Chelsea’s grip on the Women’s Super League title slipped after a stunning 4-3 loss to Liverpool at Prenton Park in what must be considered one of the games of this, and any, season.

Scorers: Román Haug 51′, Bonner 65′, 90+2′, Kiernan 81′; Beever-Jones 9′, 80′, Macario 84′

The Blues didn’t let the disappointment of their Champions League exit affect them for long, opening the scoring after just nine minutes through Aggie Beever-Jones, who did her best throughout to make up for the absence of Lauren James.

Catario Macario curled a corner into a crowed box and the 20-year-old forward got her head onto the ball for her 10th goal of the season.

Chelsea stayed on top for the next 10 minutes or so but could not find a second. Instead, Liverpool nearly equalised through Sophie Román Haug and Emma Koivisto but on both occasions, the champions’ defence bailed them out.

Taylor Hines was also involved as the Reds finished the first-half the stronger. Chelsea retained the lead though despite their slack play after a promising start.

Marie Hobinger should have equalised for Liverpool seconds into the second 45 but could not sort her feet out to finish from Ceri Holland’s cross.

Román Haug did level it up shortly after and it was more than deserved for the hosts. The Norwegian forward headed home unmarked from six yards after being left unmarked at a corner.

The Reds looked rampant after and Chelsea keeper Hannah Hampton had to be in top form to stop Mia Enderby. However, she could do nothing to prevent former Blue Gemma Bonner’s flicked header ending up in the net via an Erin Cuthbert deflection in the 65th minute.

Emma Hayes rolled on the subs in hope of a turnaround and saw her side equalise with 10 minutes to go, Beever-Jones getting her second with a close-range volley.

The game then descended into chaos with two more goals coming in the next three minutes. Liverpool’s Leanne Kiernan scored in a play directly from the kick-off before Macario levelled again after brilliant play from Cuthbert.

Both sides kept pushing and Bonner popped up again with another header from a corner to retake the lead in the second minute of added time.

Chelsea huffed and puffed looking to rescue a point but failed with Teagan Micah making one spectacular save, leaving the title out of their hands with just three games left.

Manchester City, who have played one game more, remain six points clear as they look to win the league for the first time since 2016.
