With promotion to League One secured, Wrexham know that they will have to bolster their squad this summer, despite back-to-back promotions.

The Red Dragons did phenomenally well this season in what was their EFL return after 15 years in the National League, but the step-up in quality between League One and Two is vast, and they'll be up against clubs like Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town next season.

It's well-documented that Wrexham have a pulling power that no other lower league possesses thanks to their Hollywood owners, and with results going their way on the pitch too, they're certain to be a very attractive club to join this summer.

This means that they won't struggle to recruit this summer, and you can expect a number of players through the doors at the Racecourse.

A good place for Wrexham to recruit might be players who have been released by Championship clubs this summer, as there will be plenty of players with vast experience now as free agents.

One of which is Bristol City man Matty James, with the 32-year-old looking for a new club this summer.

Matty James would be an excellent signing for Wrexham

After three seasons at Bristol City, Matty James was released, and the midfielder will be looking for a new club this summer.

James was a Premier League winner with Leicester City in 2016, and has vast experience at both Premier League and Championship level, so he won't be short of suitors.

Given their ownership, Wrexham would likely be able to afford James' wages, and the 32-year-old would certainly improve Wrexham's midfield, too.

James made 43 appearances in all competitions for Bristol City this season, and also captained the club on a number of occasions, so it's clear that it would be a coup for Wrexham if they could sign him, and his experience would be invaluable for Phil Parkinson's side.

A move to North Wales could benefit the 32-year-old for a number of reasons. Not only is he likely to play regularly for a very ambitious club, but being from Bacup in the North West of England, Wrexham isn't all too far away from home, and this could suit James and his family.

There would be scope for Wrexham to bring in at least one midfielder this summer, as club captain Luke Young has been released, whilst players like George Evans, James Jones and Jordan Davies have struggled with injuries and have been unable to string a long run of games together.

The club have the reliable Andy Cannon in midfield, but it's clear that Matty James would be a huge upgrade on the aforementioned midfielders above, and the ex-Bristol City man has shown he's resilient, having played 43 games for the Robins this season.

It seems a perfect move on paper, and Phil Parkinson should be sounding out the ex-Leicester City man ahead of a potential deal this summer.

Wrexham will be confident of competing for promotion next season

There's no doubt that it will be a huge step-up in quality next season, but Wrexham have every reason to believe that they can be in the mix for promotion, and potential signings like Matty James would certainly help the cause.

Wrexham's Hollywood owners have shown no sign of slowing down despite back-to-back promotions, and it seems like they want to take the club all the way to the Premier League.

The club may not win promotion this season, but it would be a shock if they were scrapping towards the wrong end of the table, and if they recruit well they may well be competing for the top six and more.

There's no doubt that Phil Parkinson and the Wrexham board will look to strengthen their squad significantly this summer, and it wouldn't be a surprise if they made a statement signing - like they did with Ben Foster previously.

Matty James may not be a statement signing, but he would be a very shrewd one, and would certainly improve the club's midfield.
