Blues one step closer to Europe

Scorers: Welbeck 90+8′; Palmer 34′, Nkunku 64′

Goals from Cole Palmer and Christoper Nkunku were enough to see 10-man Chelsea beat Brighton 2-1.

A win here for Chelsea would see them go above Newcastle, into sixth place and in that final European spot for next season.

Former Brighton players Marc Cucurella and Moises Caicedo were making their returns to the Amex and both were booed heavily early on.

It was the hosts who has the first genuine effort after 10 minutes as Simon Andringa struck first time from the edge of the area but saw his effort squirm just wide.

Chelsea then thought they had a penalty after Cucurella was supposedly fouled inside the area, but after consulting the VAR, the decision was overturned.

But it didn’t matter as the visitors netted soon after thanks to Cole Palmer’s brilliant header on 34 minutes.

Into the second half and almost immediately Brighton thought they had another penalty as Adringa was fouled inside the area – but the referee this time decided against a spot kick.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men doubled their lead just after the hour mark as Christopher Nkunku showed his class with a neat finish.

Chelsea captain Reece James was then shown a red card in the dying minutes after he petulantly kicked out at Joao Pedro.

Brighton netted in the eighth minute of added time as Danny Welbeck scored his first home goal of the campaign.

But it wasn’t enough as Chelsea held on for a nervy win.

Young Guns (Go For It)

Manchester United’s young guns stole the show as they beat Newcastle 3-2 at Old Trafford.

The home side came into this match looking to avert their recent crisis that saw Erik ten Hag’s side slip down to eighth in the table.

Newcastle attacked within the opening 30 seconds but Alexander Isak’s left-footed effort went wide of the post.

Casemiro has been much-maligned these past few weeks but the Brazil international showed his athleticism on 10 minutes, only to see his overhead kick go over the bar.

Alejandro Garnacho was looking like the most dangerous player for United and forced a smart save on the half hour mark afetr bursting past Kieran Trippier.

But it was Kobbie Mainoo who opened the scoring for the hosts as he made a late run into the penalty area and poked home.

It was the visitors who flew out of the blocks in the second half with Anthony Gordon equalising after tapping in from close range.

Newcastle really should have doubled their lead soon after by Isak’s effort was blocked brilliantly by Amrabat.

Amad Diallo made the Magpies pay however as he fired in a loose ball to net United’s second.

Rasmus Højlund was introduced late on and scored with almost his first touch as the Dane beat Lewis Hall to the ball and fired in a low effort.

The goals weren’t done though as Hall fired in a stunner from 25 yards that went past Andre Onana’s left hand.
