The last thing Manchester United fans needed to see after such a substandard transfer window was one of their most influential players leaving the pitch in tears.

Yet, that would indeed go on to be the case during yesterday’s dismal 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

In the closing stages of the contest, Lisandro Martinez fell to the floor with a non-contact injury, clutching at his knee. Eventually stretchered off, the centre-half looked inconsolable as he was taken off the field.

Ruben Amorim then issued a damning verdict of his condition post-match, telling reporters: “He will see a doctor. It’s a serious situation. It’s really bad for our team.”

Martinez’s torrid injury luck strikes again

While the issue is obviously unavoidable, Martinez’s injury record is now proving to be quite the red flag for United. He missed a total of 38 matches in his sophomore campaign at Old Trafford, and his absence proved detrimental to the team; their win rate with him on the pitch (65 per cent) dropped to a shocking 54 per cent when he was unavailable after they recorded only 27 wins in 50 games (per StatmanDave).

It was a metatarsal fracture that ended his maiden term as a Red before it was re-aggravated at the beginning of 2023/2024, while he also suffered with his knee and calf throughout the injury-plagued year.

Now, Amorim will be relying on Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire until Martinez returns – whenever that may be. Victor Lindelof has been deemed fit enough to make the bench in the last three matches, but Jonny Evans remains sidelined.

The boss could well look to use 18-year-old Ayden Heaven, who just arrived from Arsenal’s academy with the intention of breaking through into the first-team sooner rather than later.
