Towards the end of last season, Xabi Alonso was strongly linked with taking over as head coach of either Liverpool or Bayern Munich. However, he ultimately turned down both to remain in charge at Bayer Leverkusen, whom he had just guided to the Bundesliga title.
After this, it was the belief of many that Alonso was holding out to become Real Madrid’s next manager. That won’t happen until Carlo Ancelotti steps aside, as there is very little chance of him being sacked before his contract runs out in 2026.
Alonso’s Leverkusen contract also ends in 2026, and according to Bild (via Sport), he has no intention of renewing. In fact, it’s already taken for granted that he will head to Real Madrid as Ancelotti’s successor, although it’s unknown when this will happen.
The report also states that Real Madrid would consider going for Alonso next summer, although it would depend on whether Ancelotti stays. Regardless, it seems inevitable that the Basque coach will take the top job at the Santiago Bernabeu at some stage in the relatively-near future.
