The former Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass, who was recently released by the troubled Yorkshire club, has agreed terms with Wrexham.
Wrexham have reportedly agreed to terms on a deal to sign ex-Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass, beating the likes of Norwich City and Coventry City to his signature.
Windass, alongside fellow forward Michael Smith, both saw their Owls contracts terminated by mutual consent earlier this week, making them both free agents.
Windass had been with the club since January 2020, running up 163 League appearances and scoring 46 goals over that time.
His departure was a huge blow to Wednesday, who have had a disastrous summer, with confusion over their position regarding head coach Danny Rohl, unpaid wages, a transfer embargo, and takeover talk - which now appears to have totally stalled.
Wrexham, meanwhile, have been the subject of enormous speculation over who they will bring to the club as they seek to consolidate their position in the Championship following three promotions in as many years.
With totemic striker Paul Mullin having been loaned out to Wigan Athletic, their attack is one of the positions in which they need the most remodelling.
Our sister site GIVEMESPORT revealed on Sunday that Windass has agreed terms with Wrexham mere days after his departure from Hillsborough, with a medical booked for Monday.
The report also claims that Norwich City and Coventry City are still hopeful of convincing him to make a last-minute Racecourse U-turn, but affirms that it is Wrexham who are closing in on his signature.
Derby County and Leicester City have also been linked with a move for the former Wednesday forward this summer too.
Wrexham had also been connected with Michael Smith, the other Sheffield Wednesday player to have left the club over their issues with the non-payment of wages, and it remains a possibility that these two players could yet be brought back together at The Racecourse Ground next season.
Journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that Smith is still waiting to find out whether the Red Dragons will make an approach for him, as he looks to find his next opportunity aged 33.
With other reports that Wrexham could have a £10 million budget set aside for an attacking player, it seems that the team's front line could be in for a complete revamp ahead of the new season.
Despite having finished second in League One behind runaway champions Birmingham City last season, there is a broad agreement that the Red Dragons need to strengthen this summer if they're to continue the upward trajectory they've been on since they were purchased by the Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
If there's one thing that Wrexham can say for certain about landing Josh Windass, it's that they've picked up a player with enormous experience at this level of the game.
Windass is 31 years of age, and signed for Wednesday on loan from Wigan Athletic in January 2020, making his transfer permanent the following summer.
Over his five-and-a-half years at Hillsborough, he became a fan favourite, playing a key role in the 2022-23 team which were promoted back to the Championship from League One following an absence of two years.
His 13 goals in the Championship last season was his highest tally for an individual season of his Wednesday career, and was enough to crown him the club's top scorer.
For Sheffield Wednesday fans, this news will provide further confirmation of the decline of a team which did well to finish 12th in the Championship last season.
For Wrexham fans however, his arrival will be confirmation that, even after three promotions in four years, the owners of the club have no intention of standing still in their quest to move the club even higher.
