Birmingham City were reportedly keen on Dan Scarr but they missed out and Wrexham have capitalised

Dan Scarr's time at Wrexham may have got off to a slow start as he struggled for regular minutes in the league under Phil Parkinson, but the past couple of weeks has shown exactly why he was brought to The Racecourse.

Scarr made the move to North Wales from Plymouth Argyle in the summer, and the 29-year-old has quickly shown his quality to become a standout player for Wrexham.

His signing looked a real coup in the summer after making 28 appearances for Plymouth in the Championship last season along with helping them win the League One title the previous season, and his addition could turn out to be an excellent one, for more reasons than one.

Scarr, who came through the ranks at Birmingham City, was linked with a return to St Andrew's in the summer, but they missed out as he made the move to Wrexham, and given their status as the division's two heavyweights this season, it could come back to haunt the Blues.

It's early days, but as Wrexham and Birmingham are the division's top two sides, beating their promotion rivals to Scarr's signature not only strengthened Wrexham's squad, but it also means that Birmingham aren't as strong as they could have been.

Birmingham had an incredible transfer window and spent money that had never been seen in the third tier of English football before, but missing out on Scarr may sting, particularly as he's joined what looks to be their main promotion rivals.

Scarr was actually left out of Wrexham's starting XI for the first seven games of the season, but he made his debut from the bench against Leyton Orient at the end of September, and he hasn't looked back since.

He started the Red Dragons' two most recent league games, against Stevenage and Northampton Town, and he's been hugely impressive.

According to Fotmob, Scarr has some of the best stats in the division for players in his position, with 81.8% of duels won, 78.8% of aerial duels won, showing his strength and ability to win the ball from attackers.

He'd have been frustrated by his lack of minutes early in the season, but he's grabbed his chances with both hands, and he looks set to play a very important role for Parkinson's side as the campaign progresses.

It's easy to see why heavyweights like Birmingham City and Wrexham were keen on a move for Scarr, with the player thriving at League One level previously.

He's played 87 games in the third tier thanks to two seasons with Plymouth, and he was in excellent form for the Pilgrims during their title winning campaign two years ago, playing 32 games and developing a reputation as an excellent centre-back at this level.

It's clear that Wrexham are a hugely ambitious club and will be looking to make it three consecutive promotions, and signing a player with Scarr's experience will do their promotion hopes no harm whatsoever.

After a slow start to life in North Wales, Scarr has really stepped up in recent weeks and become a key player for Wrexham, and Birmingham City may just be looking on enviously despite their bright start to the season.
