Wolves fans watching on as their side lost 2-1 to Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.
An interesting mix of comments (see below) following the final whistle.
Newcastle dominating early on and Anthony Gordon so unlucky not to score after a brilliant run, the eventual shot hitting the post.
Wolves then hit Newcastle on the counter and got the opener.
Only for United to start to get the upper hand again as the second half went on and two brilliant goals from Schar and Barnes won it.
Wolves fans with plenty to say after the game at St James’ Park, commenting via their Molineux Mix message board:
‘We should have been at least one goal down before Lemina scored.
Good save from SJ on Murphy and then Gordon skinned both Semedo and Mosquera only to hit the post.
We started second half awfully, then got back the momentum..then we tired and Newcastle took over.
An argument might possibly be made that we deserved one point yesterday..but all in all I do think Newcastle were the better team for most parts.’
‘This one hurts because it was a game that we seemed in control of and slowly started to get more and more out of our control. We didn’t make proactive subs to keep things going.
It was a better performance but it’s a lot of high intensity pressing and bombing forward trying to counter punch teams instead of controlled possession and turning the screw.
There’s a losing mentality developing here, not just players but the crowd too. Who here genuinely thought we would (not could) go on to win after they equalised?
We have got some excellent players but they aren’t playing to the sum of their parts at the moment… look at the two starting lineups, I’d put more of ours in than theirs.’
‘O’Neil bringing Doherty on against Barnes was suicide. Stupid sub imo. As the Irish said in the week how poor he was the fact he gave up vs Barnes when he scored was shocking. If he carried on jockeying and just slightly puts him off balance the shot is harder. He basically just let him shoot.’
‘Better performance beaten by 2 great strikes.’
‘Newcastle were absolutely sh…, but good enough to beat us. We have nothing about us at all, no obvious style or pattern of play. Awful to watch. Terrible subs. I have no faith in the team, Newcastle were there for the taking today and with the games we have coming up I expect we will be cemented to the bottom of the league going into November. The team is rubbish and going down.’
‘A draw would have been fair imo. Tough start, but should do better.’
‘Stupid way to lose, we were in control at the end of the first half but couldn’t muster a half decent performance in the second to see the game out.
Newcastle weren’t great today, just 2 great strikes to do us.’
‘Never looked remotely like we were going to get 3 points. So fragile it’s unbelievable. Had a decent bench but the manager made a mess of the subs. And why do the opposition score so many screamers at molineux? You know immediately they’re going in – must be some kind of magnetic field.’
‘First half was a poor effort from both sides, enlivened by one decent move – with the exception of Gordon’s solo run – leading to the goal.
First 15 minutes of the second half Newcastle were surprisingly sloppy, despite having introduced some of their better players, and it seemed like we could maybe take the game away from them with a second goal.
After that period though, we simply resorted to type when ahead. ‘
‘You can’t do much about the fantastic strikes by Newcastle players. Wolves deserved better, but just have to take it on the chin and go again.’
‘Yes you can. Don’t let Barnes come in on his right foot on the edge of the box is a good starting point.’
‘I saw a lot of empty seats from my new position as an armchair fan having given up my ST.’
‘I noticed that today from my vantage point in the BW – plenty of empty seats in the NB.’
‘First time I can remember away fans singing ’empty seats’ to us in the Fosun era. The WV1 bit does really stand out.’
‘Yep I was cringing when they were singing that.’
‘Lots of empty seats. I can’t remember the last PL game where we haven’t sold out or very close.’
‘Came across on TV that there were loads of empty seats in all areas.’
‘Newcastle defending was good enough to prevent opponents lining up a pot shot or two. Ours wasn’t.’
‘Newcastle had been poor but still managed to control the match better than us overall.’
‘We played well and were beaten by two great goals today. Results are not reflective of the quality of our squad.’
‘Gutted. A match that could’ve gone either way but again we were on the wrong end. I can’t knock the lads’ effort and there was some quality there at times, but maybe still playing too loose like O’Neil talked about at the start of last season.’
‘Doc being the only man in football to think letting Harvey Barnes come inside is a good idea.’
‘A world class save from Pope prevented a point.’
‘We didn’t play badly as such but from the moment Barnes came on you could see he was going to do something.’
‘The first goal we conceded, yes there’s a huge slice of luck. But the momentum of the game was changing just before that. And GON was too slow to act to counter it. As an inexperienced manager I understand he won’t get it right every time, but how many more times will it take before he becomes more proactive to influence the direction of the game?’
‘Have lived and worked in the NE over half my life. Was dreading the office today but cycling up Beach Road earlier this morning, saw another cyclist but in an Everton top, and realised perhaps life isn’t so bad after all.’
‘Thought Semedo had a good game tbh, up against it v a very very good winger in Gordon and Isak trying to get in behind our defence.’
‘i really confused by so much negative and moaning, i thought we played well and deserved to win.’
‘Thought the overall display was worthy of, at least, a point. Don’t agree with Howe’s assessment that they dominated the match. Those gut-feelings that the first subs are going to be Hwang & Doc and the opposition are going to score, are becoming a constant.’
‘We hit the post twice and Pope made an excellent save, if only one had gone in and they had a lucky deflection for their goal , I was very disappointed but I don’t get all the negativity.’
‘It was a very annoying defeat, one which we are completely to blame for as a result of again slipping into that immensely defensive mindset whilst being in front.
I can understand Andre going off seeing that he had a knock, but the gap which opened as a result let Newcastle come at us. First strike was unfortunate with a deflection, whilst the second by Barnes was a firecracker and that came from the huge space which Barnes had.’
‘It was a bit like watching England play… You can’t stop playing at a goal up and I think that the most disappointing thing was conceding two goals from outside the area whilst playing with 3 CDMs. The first goal, Lemina definitely didn’t bust a gut to close down Schar, he trotted across despite the fact that Schar often goes for it outside the box. And the second goal – Doherty should not have let him inside, but Barnes went into space that Gomes could (should?) have filled, but in any event they were man for man once Doherty was beaten…. Again – you KNOW Barnes is going to try and do that.’
‘Great first half, fell apart in the second. An extremely worrying and strange pattern.’
‘You say great 1st half, I thought that we were well off the pace the 1st 20 mins and they were going down our centre far too easily. This stopped when Andre found his bearings. We could easily have been 2 down after 20 mins.’
‘Worldie by Barnes? I’d be amazed if it even gets nominated for goal of the month.’
‘Tbf it was a great strike. The height and bend on it were perfect, making it it virtually unstoppable once it left Barnes’ boot.’
‘I think Gary O’Neil’s apparent game plan of a narrow press which reacted to triggers in the midfield seemed to be effective in countering what was otherwise the momentum in Newcastle’s favour, and I think this was especially so in the 15-65 minute marks. Because on 15 minutes we started to get André involved in the transition, where we’d been forcing the pass. Then it started to fall apart at 65’. We’d switched the ball out to the wings effectively once they packed the midfield; we had begun to drive forward on the wings; but Newcastle figured that out, and instead of reacting to Newcastle’s reaction we started to invite pressure which is when we allow worldie attempts to go in. From there, we begin chasing the game and are already on an uphill battle. But we still have some brilliant chances, only for Nick pope to save their skin multiple times with some brilliant saves.
Controlled the flow of the game for a period in slight excess of half the game , did a usual wolves of failing to react in game and invited pressure. Despite this it took heroics from Newcastle for us to lose. Played well, not great.’
‘The positive spin on Semedo , I quote Sky , saying “ Gordon has Semedo on toast “. If Gordon’s shot in the first half that hit the post had gone in, then you would not be saying how good Semedo was v Doherty.’
‘Semedo pretty much kept Gordon out of the game.’
‘Are you sure about Semedo and Gordon ? Looked like he couldn’t get close to him in the first half.’
‘I don’t see how you can say Semedo kept Gordon out of the game. He got his pants pulled down all first half until he switched sides for Barnes to come on and pull his pants down, too.
Semedo has been excellent for us and gets more undeserved stick than anybody else but he was awful yesterday, sadly.’
‘From what I saw in the first half Semedo was stopping Gordon mostly by fouling him to the point where you could see the ref telling him one more and he’d get a booking. Then Gordon shifted centrally in the second half to replace Isak and Semedo didn’t need to worry about him.’
‘I thought we were poor and did not play well except for a 10 minute spell in the second half. We were slow to the ball, played too deep, did not press them and gave them too much time and space on the ball. At about 30 mins in Sky showed a graphic with NUFC on 76% possession.’
