Born and raised in Newcastle Upon Tyne, McKinney was employed as a panel-beater before signing full-time professional forms with the Magpies in 1956.
A solid full-back in his playing days, the defender was a deputy to Dick Keith during the late 1950s and clocked up 94 appearances for the club, scoring eight goals before departing St. James' Park in 1965, retiring three years later.
