Manchester City are delighted to announce the permanent signing of Laura Wienroither.

The versatile defender has penned a two-year deal which will keep her at the Joie Stadium until the summer of 2027.

It follows the Austria international’s productive loan spell from Arsenal last season where she made eight appearances in all competitions and was a member of the squad who participated in the inaugural World Sevens tournament.

She made her debut for the Blues in a 3-1 win over Leicester in the FA Cup before making her Barclays Women’s Super League bow in a draw away with West Ham.

Wienroither returns to the Club with a wealth of experience in top-flight football and on the international stage having played 51 times for the Gunners while earning 40 caps for her nation.

The 26-year-old also remains the only Austrian player to represent City and she will immediately link-up with her team-mates as we build towards the 2025/26 campaign.

Speaking of her permanent arrival at the Club, Wienroither said: “I really enjoyed the last six months, I feel like I’ve settled in well. I really like the girls, I really like the staff.

“I think it’s a good group of people here. Everyone is just looking out for each other and I’m honestly so happy to be staying here.

“So, when the opportunity came up that I can stay, I didn’t have to think twice, it was a no-brainer for me. I’m so happy to be finally here.”

Manchester City Women Director of Football, Therese Sjogran added: “We’re delighted that we’ve been able bring Laura to City as a permanent signing.

"Laura’s application and performances were outstanding throughout her loan spell last season and, as I expected in January, brought even more quality in the full-back position.

“As we get ready to challenge for trophies from the first minute of what I know will be an exciting 2025/26 campaign, Laura’s reintegration will be a smooth one as I know she shares our ambitions.”

CALMING PRESENCE

When examining Wienroither’s eight appearances for City last term, it’s clear to see why Club have swooped for her services on a permanent basis.

She proved to be a dependable option for the Blues last term when the squad was stretched thin as we competed on four fronts amid ongoing injury issues.

After impressing in an FA Cup win over Leicester on her debut, she was then handed her first league start in a tricky trip to West Ham in far from ideal conditions in east London.

Despite drawing with the Irons, she showcased what her game is all about with an assured display at full-back where she was consistently solid at the back while also providing an option down the flank.

That calmness is an art mastered throughout her impressive career so far which saw her break-through at Union Kleinmunchen in 2014 before remaining in Austria with SV Neulengbach ahead of a move to St Polten where she won a league and cup double.

That then prompted a move to Hoffenheim in Germany where she helped them to promotion before Champions League qualification where her displays in Europe caught Arsenal’s attention.

There, she helped them to two League Cup triumphs and she showcased her determination and positivity when recovering from an ACL injury to return to action in 2023/24 – 18 months before her City arrival.

Now back with the Blues permanently, she’ll once again be a valuable member of the team on and off the pitch as she looks to recapture former glories with City.
