The international break is crawling by – it’s time to wheel out some wild speculation to keep us all entertained before we get back into the action on Saturday.
Before they got onto the topic of the players they might buy, they made a very good and very timely point about the players we might need to sell.
It’s not a natural time to sell – but on the other hand with so many players not getting sufficient league minutes to keep them happy, it might become necessary. It keeps bad vibes away from the squad, and stops players losing too much value.
We’d also add to that another factor – the sporting directors don’t want to sell players they have bought. Not only is it an admission of their own failings, it also almost guarantees a realised loss on the books, which we can’t handle at the moment.
As we’ve seen in the last 12 months, that pushes them towards selling players who were signed before their arrival, whether or not that seems to make the best sense for the team.
You can see them discussing the idea in the clip embedded here:
Renato Veiga scores for Chelsea.
Renato Veiga is a name that ends up coming up a lot in the video. He’s so far been our backup left back and our backup defensive midfielder. In both positions, we could do with a signing (or the return of a player from loan).
So it’s likely that that decision will be made largely on the basis of what Maresca thinks of Veiga and his potential in each position. If he’s seen as a solid reserve left back, maybe we recall Lesley Ugochukwu or sign a midfielder. If Veiga is seen more as a reserve midfielder, we could move for a left back.
