Legendary Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris is loving life in Los Angeles and Major League Soccer so much he is ready to support America as well as his beloved France in next summer’s World Cup finals.
His former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has joined him Stateside as head coach of the USA national team. Now into his second season of MLS action he would recommend the move to any of his former team mates too – including England’s Harry Kane.
“I hope and I wish to follow the World Cup from the US next summer,” Lloris said.” My personal situation, I don’t know. I’m focused on this season and we’ll see for the next one.
“We can feel the excitement of the people for football here. There’s a really strong fan base that I was not expecting when I arrived. We play in a full stadium with nice atmospheres. We have a really good approach to the football game. Different coaching with different game styles. It’s really interesting,
“The World Cup is a major tournament that everybody will be focused on. Even more now by seeing my ex-manager, Mauricio Pochettino, as the US national team manager.
“Obviously, I will support France, but I will also support the USA.“I’m still in touch with him. He’s got a big challenge ahead of him and it’s good to see him in that position.”
The World Cup winning keeper ended over a decade at Spurs when it was announced in December 2023 he would be playing for LAFC in the 2024 season. He was happy to extend for a second season and has been joined on the west coast by his fellow France countryman Olivier Giroud. They won their first club trophy together in September’s US Open Cup Final.
When HaytersTV caught up with the chilled out duo at LAFC’s impressive training centre last week, we asked Lloris about the prospect of more European players joining him in MLS action, including his fellow Spurs favourite Kane.
Lloris smiled and added: “Harry is really busy right now with Bayern Munich! I hope that this season will be the one for him by winning trophies, collective trophies.
“I’m still in touch with some of my old team-mates and I follow them. It’s all about decisions and moments in your career. I never look backwards but I’m already 38 and season after season, year after year, time is running so fast. You need to enjoy the present and the moment.
“The football here? I take my job like I used to do. Outside football is a life with probably less pressure, it’s more quiet. Soccer, like they call it, or football in Europe is bigger.
“There is obviously more pressure from fans, media. It doesn’t mean that there is no pressure, especially when you are an athlete, you put the pressure towards yourself because you still want to perform.
“But it’s been a really good experience so far for me and my family on and off the field. Every time that you face a new experience, you just try to discover, to open your mind. I’m really pleased with the way my family and especially my children adapted to their new life.”
