The 32-year-old becomes the Terriers' tenth signing of the summer, and has penned a three-year agreement with the Yorkshire club.

Football League World exclusively reported on Monday morning that Huddersfield were finally set to land the former League One top scorer as part of a £1.2 million deal. They tried to buy him from Charlton Athletic last summer for £750,000 before Birmingham hijacked their agreement and convinced May to join them.

He scored 16 league goals for Blues in a multi-record-breaking campaign for the club that saw them win the third tier. Huddersfield will now hope that he can bring the same good fortune to their club as they seek a Championship return.

Why Huddersfield Town have signed Alfie May

Their new boss Lee Grant, who is a first-time manager, has been handed as good a toolbox as you can ask for to get the club out of League One. In the announcement of the forward's arrival, he detailed why the Terriers felt it necessary to pay another seven-figure fee for a forward.

"Alfie is a natural goalscorer with a formidable record in recent years, so we’re really pleased to bring him into the group ahead of the new season kicking off.

"He has a strong mentality, an infectious personality and is full of belief, and those are the hallmarks of all successful strikers. His skillset is different to what we already have in the squad and he compliments the players that he’ll be featuring alongside well, so we look forward to having the opportunity to get straight down to work with him this week.

"Alfie is another player we’ve introduced to the squad this summer that knows what’s required to be successful at the right end of this division, and that experience will be invaluable across the course of the season."

Huddersfield Town's superteam construction is almost complete

In the January window, while Michael Duff was still in charge, Huddersfield spent respective fees of £750,000 and more than £3 million on Dion Charles and Joe Taylor - two players with very strong League One records, but they weren't able to push Town up the table.

May has an even better record in the division, having amassed 82 goals in his last four seasons in the third tier.

It's nothing short of a statement of intent by the Terriers, as if they hadn't made one already. The majority of their 10 signings are either top-end League One level or even good enough to play in the Championship.

The pressure will be on Grant to make things work, because there really won't be any excuses for him given the squad he's been given to work with.
