Football League World assess MLS striker Patrick Agyemang and whether he would fit in at Derby County & Ipswich Town

Derby County and Ipswich Town are set to battle it out for Charlotte FC striker Patrick Agyemang this summer.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed via X that the Rams were “closing in” on a deal for the 24-year-old.

GIVEMESPORT's USA reporter Tom Bogert contradicted that report, stating that Derby aren’t as close to a deal for the forward as originally thought, with fellow Championship outfit Ipswich Town in the running for Agyemang’s signature too.

Despite being highly rated in the States, Agyemang is somewhat of an unknown quantity to supporters of the English game, so Football League World have dived into the forward’s profile and assessed whether he would be a good fit for Derby and Ipswich.

Patrick Agyemang has proven his goalscoring credentials in the US

Agyemang signed for Charlotte FC in February 2023 via the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, as the 12th overall selection. Prior to his professional career, Agyemang spent time at the University of Rhode Island and Eastern Connecticut State University.

During his stint with the latter, he made 39 appearances and scored 30 goals while contributing 10 assists, which alerted the attention of multiple MLS outfits.

The striker’s first season at Charlotte FC saw him split his time between the club’s first team and their MLS NEXT Pro (the nation’s development division) outfit, Crown Legacy FC. Netting 10 times in 12 appearances there saw him solidify his place in the main side’s 11, where he has remained ever since.

Since then, he has bagged 18 times in 54 outings for Charlotte FC, earning himself a call up to the USMNT by Mauricio Pochettino in January.

At just 24 years of age, Agyemang has room to develop and grow into a deadlier operator in the English game but has proven himself to be a marksman in front of goal during his time in the US.

With Ipswich now in the equation regarding a potential deal for Agyemang, it may be hard for John Eustace to convince the forward to join Derby.

The Tractor Boys are likely to fight for promotion to the Premier League next term and would therefore represent a much more attractive option for the 24-year-old.

If Ipswich can guarantee Agyemang consistent playing time, they are likely to have the legs over the Rams during negotiations.

Following Liam Delap’s sale, Kieran McKenna’s side have a gaping hole up front that needs filling. Agyemang matches his profile and

would provide the Tractor Boys with a tall, strong operator who could lead the line for them next term.

Standing at 6 ft 4 in, his physicality would allow him to tackle the brutal nature of Championship football and help Ipswich deal with Delap’s absence.

Therefore, if the striker does move to England this summer, picking Portman Road may end up being his best chance of success.
