Which wingers should Liverpool target this summer amid Mohamed Salah doubts? | OneFootball

As Liverpool prepare for a new post-Jurgen Klopp era, the attention will soon turn to their summer transfer business.

The Reds are believed to be in the market for a new winger, a potential long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah, who turns 32 next month and has been strongly linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.

That could mean wide areas will be a priority for Liverpool when the transfer window reopens.

We’ve assessed three potential options for the Reds.

Bryan Mbeumo

Bryan Mbeumo has been Brentford’s star man this season.

The Cameroon international has an impressive 15 goal contributions in the Premier League, scoring nine times and providing six assists.

If Liverpool are looking for a wide forward capable of cutting in from the right flank, Mbeumo could well be the man. Only four players — Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Salah and Erling Haaland — have a higher left-footed xG (8.43) than the Brentford player in the Premier League this season.

Mbeumo is also a creator, ranking 12th in the division for through-balls attempted (15).

His direct, aggressive style of play could make him a good fit and a potential fan-favourite at Anfield.

Anthony Gordon

A former Everton player might not be every Liverpool fan’s first-choice signing this summer.

But a return to Merseyside could make sense for Anthony Gordon, who has had an exceptional season at Newcastle.

With 11 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League, the 23-year-old is one of just four players to hit the double-double this season, alongside Ollie Watkins, Salah and Palmer.

No player in the division has been fouled more often in the final third (25) and more often than not Gordon gives opposition defenders a difficult time.

Given his obvious potential and his connection to the club, a move to Liverpool might tick plenty of boxes.

Johan Bakayoko

Away from the Premier League, PSV winger Johan Bakayoko has been linked with a switch to Anfield.

The Belgium international has been exceptional for the Eredivisie champions this season, scoring 12 goals and registering nine assists.

Like compatriot Jeremy Doku, who moved to Manchester City last summer, Bakayoko has explosive pace and is a direct runner, ranking second in the Dutch top flight for take-ons completed (87).

The 21-year-old is equally adept as a goal scorer and a chance creator, repeatedly cutting onto his left foot at speed from the right flank.

Only four Eredivisie players have completed more passes in the final third than Bakayoko (467), and he ranks fourth for total shots (95).

There is room for improvement, of course, but joining Liverpool could see an already exciting prospect reach new heights.
