The Addicks are a club with a rich history that has fallen on tough times in recent years, with five successive seasons languishing in League One finally coming to an end with a play-off final triumph last season.

Nathan Jones is now preparing to try and consolidate the London club's place in the Championship this season, which will leave them with a strong platform to build on in the future.

However, looking back on the past, Charlton have enjoyed strong periods in their history, particularly in the mid-1900s, and again under legendary manager Alan Curbishley in the Premier League.

The Addicks are a club that is hard to place on the scale of the biggest clubs in the UK, with so many ups and downs throughout their long history. So, Football League World asked ChatGPT where it believes Charlton ranks in the UK's 60 biggest football clubs.

The United Kingdom is home to some of the biggest football clubs, not only in Europe, but in the entire world, with elite clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal all globally recognised as giants of the beautiful game.

Not only are English clubs recognised in this list though, with Scottish powerhouses Celtic and Rangers also boasting an enormous stature, who both also have global fanbases.

Of course, Charlton rank nowhere near them, but still have enough of a successful history and fanbase to be considered a 'big club' in the EFL, and were certainly out of place being in League One in comparison with their stature.

In a list of the 60 biggest clubs in the UK, ChatGPT ranks the Addicks in 38th place, which would put them as a mid-table Championship club, and is likely not far off where other football fans would rank them in the UK footballing ladder.

AI explains the reasons behind Charlton ranking

When asked to give the reasoning behind its choice to rank Charlton 38th, the AI suggested that the London club has enjoyed moderate success in its history, such as their FA Cup win in 1947, but they remain overshadowed by other clubs in the capital.

However, ChatGPT also recognises that the stadium, infrastructure, and cultural and regional impact are key pillars in what helps bring up Charlton's stature in the UK's footballing pyramid, making it a club with huge potential.

As for clubs in and around Charlton in the AI's rankings, the Addicks are placed one place behind QPR, and one ahead of League One Reading. But, they are ranked two places above bitter rivals Millwall, which will certainly please some of the club's supporters.

Interestingly, ChatGPT ranks just three Scottish clubs as bigger than Charlton, which are Rangers, Celtic, and Aberdeen. With a strong history and infrastructure, the southeast London side are a well-recognised club across the UK.
