Change is desperately needed at Manchester United this summer.

Whatever way one can look at the situation, a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final has to be viewed as a missed opportunity.

A season that was already appalling beyond measure had a rare chance of some redemption. Not to mention, critically, a surprise route back into the riches of the Champions League.

Sadly, that ship has long since set sail, with the Red Devils in desperate need of a clear-out.

In the meantime, fans will be forced to put up with every kind of dig coming their way after Spurs ended a 17-year trophy drought.

Of course, Liverpool’s poster boy, Mo Salah, couldn’t resist a gentle dig at his club’s traditional arch rivals Manchester United.

The Egyptian international, still basking in the glow of the Merseysiders’ second Premier League title win in five years, jumped on X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts after the final in Bilbao.

The No.11 was referencing Ange Postecoglou’s now-infamous quote back in September 2024 (via BBC Sport): “I always win things in my second year. Nothing has changed. I don’t say things unless I believe them.”

To his credit, the Australian did manage to keep his word. Of course, we hardly need a reminder of that fact after a season that is set to yield United’s lowest-ever points total.

Hope for Manchester United

It’s the slimmest of silver linings, but the lack of any European football for us in the 2025/26 season could prove a minor blessing in disguise.

Don’t get us wrong, the superior funds of the Champions League would have been a much-welcome boost ahead of a likely summer of change.

But the prospect of fewer games in the midweek and extra time on the training pitch surely has to appeal to Ruben Amorim. That is, of course, if the former Sporting CP boss is allowed to hold on to his post.

Coupled with a proper pre-season and some new faces who can help the Portuguese head coach establish a sense of structure and identity within the starting XI, the only way is up.

We just have to hope our heartbreak in Bilbao is Manchester United’s genuine rock bottom.
