Football League World looks at Birmingham City's estimated wage bill amid a significant contract offer for Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku

After achieving promotion back to the Championship at the very first time of asking as League One champions, Birmingham City hold every intention of continuing to flex their financial muscles and maintaining their upwards trajectory, bankrolled by Knighthead Capital Management's ambitious project.

Birmingham ensured they made little secret of their ambition by investing heavily during the last summer transfer window, which saw the likes of Christoph Klarer, Willum Willumsson, Alfie May and, most notably of all, Jay Stansfield, all arrive at St Andrews @ Knighthead Park.

Blues' lavish investment was done to an otherworldly degree compared to League One standards, but it ultimately reaped the rewards as Chris Davies' side lifted the third-tier title and ensured an unhitched return to the Championship.

They are now looking to emulate that once again this summer.

Birmingham City's contract offer to Peterborough United's Kwame Poku

As exclusively revealed by Football League World, Birmingham are ready to lodge a staggering weekly contract offer worth £30,000 to Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku in a bid to see off competition from Scottish side Rangers.

Poku, who added his 12th goal of the league campaign despite spending much of it out injured in his side's 2-1 defeat against Blues earlier this month, is poised to leave Peterborough once his contract expires at the end of the season.

It was previously confirmed by Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony that Poku had rejected a club-record contract offer in order to gain a move elsewhere.

It's unlikely, of course, that they have the financial means to propose any terms close to what has been placed on the table by Birmingham.

The exciting winger has been one of the best players on offer in League One over the last few years and would be an extremely handy addition to Davies' side heading into 2025/26, with few surely in any doubt over how seamlessly his talents could adapt to life in the Championship.

The exact amounts that Birmingham are paying each player remain unclear, but what is known is that their wage bill is unsurprisingly significant.

As per Capology, a site which provides estimated salary information, Blues' annual wage bill is £16,016,000, or £308,000 on a weekly basis.

It's likely that Poku, should he accept the offer, would be one of, if not the top earner in the squad, but his arrival would hardly break the bank considering just how much Blues have already been willing to commit to investing in the side.

Indeed, Birmingham's estimated wage bill would already be the 12th-highest in the Championship for the current campaign, and one can only envisage that getting even higher with exciting potential additions such as Poku and others as they look to make a number of statements of their own intent.
