Potter replaced Julen Lopetegui, who was sacked on Wednesday after only six months in charge following a poor start to the season with the club languishing in 14th place in the Premier League table, seven points above the relegation zone.

With this marking Potter's first return to management after his short-lived spell at London rivals Chelsea, he's outlined his excitement at the challenge of reversing the Hammers’ fortunes.

However, Keane has warned the 49-year-old that he faces an uphill task at the London Stadium, citing the club’s treatment of Lopetegui as well as David Moyes as worrying examples.

"It seems an odd bunch at West Ham in terms of players and what goes on at board level, we see the way they treat managers," he said on ITV ahead of kick-off between the Hammers and Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round. “What they’ve done with the previous manager, probably not giving him enough time.

“Look at the way they treated David Moyes towards the end in terms of there’s a contract and then withdrawing it. They treat their managers really badly I think at West Ham, so it's a big job for him.

"The players look an odd group, they look like a difficult bunch to manage. A lot of ability in some of the attacking players, defensively they’re all over the place.

"Is it a good fit? I'm not so sure, time will tell of course."

Potter’s first game in charge of West Ham ended in defeat against Aston Villa following two quick-fire second half goals from Amadou Onana and Morgan Rogers to cancel out Lucas Paqueta’s ninth minute opener.

Speaking afterwards, Keane outlined where the Hammers need to strengthen.

“In terms of West Ham going forward and their attacking play, I think there’s a lot of good stuff,” he added. “Obviously they’ve got one or two injuries again tonight but in general, it’s the defence. They are too open, we saw it in the second half and that’s their big problem.

“In terms of a bit of quality going forward, I think there’s enough for them to work on but defensively is the big problem for West Ham going forward and they will probably have to invest in January.

“They have got to be harder to beat. As much as we’re giving them praise they gave up two goals, it could have been a lot more. Defensively is the big problem going forward.”
