Talks between West Ham United and Roma over Gianluca Scamacca’s return to Serie A are underway, reports talkSPORT.

While the Giallorossi had a season-long loan in mind when they approached the Hammers a few days ago, the Italian could go back to his homeland on a permanent basis.

With Tammy Abraham facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an ACL injury in a 2-1 home win over Spezia on the final 2022/23 Serie A matchday, Jose Mourinho wants a new striker.

His search for a prolific marksman to lead the line in the Englishman’s absence has put Scamacca back on Roma’s radar, as they were interested in capturing his services during his time at Sassuolo.

Following an impressive breakthrough season at the Mapei Stadium, the 24-year-old had plenty of options to choose between before joining West Ham last summer.

Convinced Scamacca could be a long-term solution to the Irons’ scoring problems, David Moyes shelled out around £30.5 million to bring the Italian to the London Stadium.

However, the move hasn’t panned out as expected, with the sporadic Italy international making only 16 Premier League appearances during his first season in England.

Despite netting three times in seven outings during West Ham’s triumphant Europa Conference League campaign, Scamacca is no longer part of Moyes’ plans.

Roma are ready to offer him an escape route from London as Mourinho targets a more proactive recruitment campaign compared to last summer after losing the Europa League final to Sevilla in May.

Houssem Aouar has already joined the Stadio Olimpico side as a free agent after running down his contract at Lyon, but the Portuguese manager is hopeful of adding a few more pieces to his puzzle.

Andrea Belotti’s short-term stint in Rome has been an unmitigated disaster, leaving the Giallorossi reluctant to extend his stay beyond the summer.

With Abraham injured, Roma must address the shortage of numbers in the front third, so Scamacca’s permanent return to Serie A could be on the cards.
