West Brom have joined Birmingham City in the race to sign an out of contract Sheffield Wednesday player

West Bromwich Albion have reportedly made contact with Josh Windass' entourage as they look to beat Birmingham City to the signing of the Sheffield Wednesday forward.

That's according to a report from Birmingham World, who say that the attacking midfielder is looking likely to leave the Owls before the start of next season.

Windass is out of contract at Hillsborough this summer, although Wednesday did confirm in their end of season retained list that they have offered him a new deal.

So far though, that is yet to be signed, which has led to some significant interest in the 30-year-old from elsewhere.

It has already been reported that Birmingham are keen to tempt Windass to move to St Andrew's, despite their relegation from the Championship to League One at the end of last season.

Now however, it appears as though the midfielder could have the chance to remain in the second-tier for the coming campaign, even if he does indeed leave Sheffield Wednesday.

West Brom enter Josh Windass transfer update

As per this latest update, West Brom are now interested in the signing of Windass this summer, as they aim to bolster their attacking midfield options.

It is thought that representatives of the Baggies have already made contact with the player's entourage, to assess whether he would be interested in a move to The Hawthorns.

So far this summer, West Brom are yet to make a first-team signing, although Norwegian defender Torbjorn Heggem is reportedly set for a medical with the club on Tuesday.

This is the first transfer window since Shilen Patel took over as owner of the club, having purchased a controlling stake from Guochuan Lai back in February.

The Baggies missed out on promotion to the Premier League last season after defeat to Southampton in the Championship play-off semi-finals, ensuring they will be playing second-tier football again next season.

Sheffield Wednesday will also be competing in the Championship again after their great escape from the relegation zone at the end of the campaign.

Having joined the Owls, first on loan and then permanently, back in 2020, Windass has since made 135 appearances in all competitions for Sheffield Wednesday, scoring 40 goals and providing 17 assists in that time.

Josh Windass could be a good signing for West Brom

There is an argument that Windass would be a useful addition for the Baggies to make to their squad, if they can get it done.

The departures of the likes of Matt Phillips, Adam Reach and Jovan Malcolm, do mean it looks as though West Brom need to add some attacking impetus to their midfield this summer.

Windass is someone who has shown over the years that he can provide that, and has plenty of experience at Championship level as well, which ought to be helpful.

Previous comments from Patel have also suggested that West Brom will still be working carefully from a financial perspective in the transfer window.

As a result, a player such as Windass who is available on a free transfer, could suit them nicely in that respect as well.

Beyond that, getting one over one of their local rivals in the form of Birmingham by beating them to this signing, is something that will no doubt go down well with the Baggies faithful too.

West Brom, with Windass looking well set to be available this summer.
