The Baggies have been on the lookout for a new boss since Carlos Corberan left for Valencia on Christmas Eve, and a host of names have been linked with the vacancy in the past two weeks.

It emerged this week that Hake was a serious candidate, and it appears the 53-year-old is now in line to take over, as Football Insider has claimed that he has ‘verbally accepted’ an offer to take over, with the club now drawing up contracts.

Rene Hake to become new West Brom boss

This will be the first managerial role for Hake in English football, but he will arrive at Albion with a wealth of experience.

Hake has had several jobs in his home country, managing the likes of Twente, Utrecht and Go Ahead Eagles, among other clubs.

And, his most recent job saw him involved in English football, as he was named as Erik ten Hag’s assistant at Man United in the summer of 2024, but he departed when the former Ajax chief was sacked at Old Trafford in November.

Now, Hake looks set to embrace a new challenge, as he looks to build on the outstanding work that Corberan had done over the years with the Baggies.

West Brom will look to reach the Premier League under Rene Hake

Clearly, Hake is a respected figure in the game, as he has a lot of experience in the Eredivisie and Dutch football, whilst the fact ten Hag brought him to United as a coach suggests he values his tactical knowledge.

However, this appointment is obviously a risk in the sense that he has no managerial experience in England, and his record as a manager has been mixed over the years.

So, we don’t know how this will play out, but Albion fans will be pleased that this is now sorted, and they have to trust sporting director Andrew Nestor, as he has interviewed many candidates, and Hake is the one who has stood out.

Once this is confirmed, all attention will turn to trying to win promotion this season, which has to be the aim for Albion.

Hake is inheriting a side that are currently occupying the final play-off place, and there is a lot of proven talent in the Baggies squad.
