Werder Bremen have rewarded 21-year-old German goalkeeping prospect Min Backhaus with a new deal. Backhaus’ new contract may have some significance for exit rumors surrounding current Bremen no. 1 Michael Zetterer. The Hanseaten side may nevertheless still wish to take it slowly with the Mönchengladbach-native before making him a Bundesliga starter.

Backhaus has represented Germany 14 times at Germany U20 level and below. The youngster appears to have a bright future, but has still not made his Bundesliga debut. It does appear that Werder do wish to tap the promising talent as their keeper of the future.

Whether or not Backhaus receives the type of “baptism by fire” that SC Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu had to endure remains to be seen. Rumors linking Zetterer with a move to Copenhagen are also cooling with the Danish club now – per Sport Bild– turning their attention to Bayer Leverkusen’s Matej Kovar.

Sport Bild also reports that Backhaus has received an exit clause as part of his new deal. The amount is not divulged, but the €2m-valued keeper has secured a chance to further his career elsewhere.

Werder gave me a clear picture of what my path here could look like right from the start,” Backhaus remarked in a club statement. “That impressed me and gives me the confidence that I can develop optimally here. I know that the competition is fierce here too – but that’s exactly what appeals to me. I’m here to justify the long-term trust that the club has placed in me.”

“Mio is a great goalkeeping talent who we believe is capable of making the leap to the Bundesliga,” SV licensing head Peter Niemeyer added in his own statement. “We are very satisfied with Mio’s performances. Mio has everything it takes to be a modern goalkeeper. He works hard and is an important part of our goalkeeping team. He puts himself under pressure in every training session and wants to improve every day.
