‘We were far superior’… Inigo Martinez rues mistakes made by Barcelona following the 4-4 draw against Atletico Madrid | OneFootball

FC Barcelona were unable to take any advantage from the home game of the Copa del Rey semi-final against Atletico Madrid as they played out a 4-4 draw.

Things could have been significantly worse for the Catalans, as they were 2 goals down by the 6th minute. However, they showed incredible spirit to mount a comeback and ended the first half with a 3-2 advantage on the scoreboard.

Goals from Pedri and Pau Cubarsi allowed the Blaugranes to equalize scores before Inigo Martinez scored another goal with a header to give his side the lead.

As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the Basque defender also talked to the media after the game and was quite self-critical for giving away four goals.

The center-back was clear that Barcelona were the better team on the night:

“When you give gifts to these Atlético players, naturally, they score goals. We were far superior, I think this match could have ended 6-2, but it finished 4-4. The second leg will be tough in such a difficult stadium, but if we do things as we know how we will achieve it.”

The Barcelona defender rued the fact that his team allowed the visitors to get back into the game in the last moments:

“In football, it’s all about getting it right. We made two mistakes at the end and two at the beginning. Everything was looking great, but it became clear that this team needs to stay focused for the entire match. They smelled blood at the end, just like they did to us in La Liga. Now it’s time to rest and keep winning in the league.”

It was definitely disappointing to see Atletico Madrid get two goals in the final phase of the game to go into the second leg on an equal basis with Barcelona. But this makes the second leg even more exciting, as both teams will do their best to get to the final.
