Marc Cucurella has admitted it will be a disappointment if Chelsea don’t get their hands on the Conference League trophy this season.

The Blues are strong favourites the competition and have a 100% record, winning all six of their matches in the league phase.

Enzo Maresca’s men begin the knockout phase of the competition on Thursday night as they take on FC Copenhagen in the first leg of their last 16 tie, with the return at Stamford Bridge next week.

Cucurella admits it will be a disappointment if Chelsea don’t win the Conference League

Chelsea are yet to win a trophy under the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital ownership having lost the Carabao Cup final last season.

With the Blues out of both domestic cups, the Conference League represents their best and only chance of silverware this season.

Maresca has added Cole Palmer, Trevoh Chalobah and Mathis Amougou to the squad for the knockout stages, and Palmer’s addition will be a welcome boost.

Cucurella has been in brilliant form this season.

With injuries and January departures the Blues have lost their ability to make wholesale changes for these games, but whatever team they put out they should be beating the level of opposition they come up against.

The Blues will come in for criticism if they don’t win and Cucurella has admitted it will be a disappointment if they don’t lift the trophy in May.

“Yes for sure, 100 per cent,” he said as quoted by The Athletic.

“We are a top club, Chelsea have players with a lot of skills and abilities. We need to feel that we can win the competition, to believe that we are ready and can do it.

“For us, it is an important tournament and we will give our all to win this game.”
