Ruben Amorim admits he is concerned about the injuries suffered by duo Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount in the 3-2 win over Burnley.
Bruno Fernandes scored a late penalty to give United their first win of the season, after the newly promoted Clarets had twice come from behind to level the score.
Both Cunha and Mount were forced off during the game and the United boss admits losing both would be a huge blow.
“I don’t know, we will check them,” he said when asked about the severity of the injuries. “We need those guys really bad to be really competitive.”
Amorim also revealed he is having to protect new signing Benjamin Sesko because of a lack of minutes before joining United – and says it is the reason why he did not take one of the first penalties for his side in their Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out defeat to Grimsby Town on Wednesday.
“Everything is connected,” Amorim said. “He finished the game (against Grimsby) with cramp. That’s why we protected Ben from the penalties.
“Today it was that reason also. Josh (Zirkzee) is also a striker, a national team striker, but Ben, during the pre-season, he didn’t do 90 minutes and he did that on Wednesday.
“With the problem of Cunha, you don’t know if that full game in the middle of the week had something to do with the injury today. With the problem with Mason Mount, I was not risking another player not knowing if they are able to play so many minutes.”
Despite another game in which United failed to keep a clean sheet, Amorim again defended goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, as well as Andre Onana who was on the bench against Burnley.
“They are human,” he said. “At Manchester United, everything is in the news. Everybody talks about the goalkeeper and you can see I can change the goalkeeper but these situations happen. We are in that moment.
“It’s hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment, but if you look at the first goal, we can defend the box better. We suffered a similar goal against Fulham because we don’t do the full rotation of the team when the ball is on the other side.
“All these small things have nothing to do with the goalkeeper.
“It’s not just the goalkeepers. I think everybody has to improve.”
